Global energy consumption increased by 1% in 2016, coal consumption decreased by 1.7


According to the World Energy Statistics Yearbook released by BP, global coal consumption fell 1.7 per cent year-on-year in 2016, down 53 million tonnes of oil.Equivalent.
 
Last year, coal's share of global energy consumption fell to 28.1 per cent, compared with its share since 2004.
 
The decline in coal consumption was most pronounced in the United States by 8.8 percent, China by 1.6 percent and the United Kingdom by 52.5 percent.
 
In addition, coal production also fell by 6.2, about 0.231 billion tons of oil equivalent, with the largest decline in the United States, down 19 per cent, while China's production fell by 7.9 per cent.
 
At the same time, renewable energy (excluding hydropower) grew by 14.1 percent last year, which is lower than the 10-year average, but still the largest increase on record, about 53 million tons of oil equivalent. BP pointed out that renewable energy was once again the fastest growing resource in 2016.
 
Wind power accounts for more than half of the increase in renewable energy, and solar energy accounts for about 1/3.
 
China overtook the United States as the largest producer of renewable energy. In terms of regions, the Asia-Pacific region ranks first in renewable energy production, surpassing Europe and Eurasia.
 
In 2016, hydropower grew by 2.8 percent, with China and the United States showing the largest increases.
 
Last year, global natural gas consumption grew by 1.5 per cent, below the 10-year average of 2.3 per cent.
 
Across all resources, global energy consumption grew by 1 percent in 2016, compared with 0.9 percent in 2015 and 1 percent in 2014. The average growth over the past 10 years is 1.8 percent.
